Domestic economy

Policy topic: Economy

In short

Treasury monitors and reports on Australia’s economic conditions.

Our domestic economic role includes:

  • monitoring and assessing Australia's economic conditions and outlook
  • advising on current and future conditions
  • providing economic forecasts that inform the budget estimates for revenue and expenditure.

We document our analysis and advice through reports.

Pre-election Economic and Fiscal Outlook report

We produce a Pre-Election Economic and Fiscal Outlook Report before every federal election.

The report covers:

  • government financial decisions up to an election announcement
  • other circumstances that may have a material effect on the fiscal and economic outlook.

Treasury publishes the report within 10 days of a writ for a general election.

Statistical data

The Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS) provides statistics on the domestic economy.
